GuideSuffolk County
Flood zones and flood insurance by area
How much of each Suffolk County area FEMA maps in its flood zone, flood insurance claims by ZIP since 1978, and what the zone changes for a mortgage.
Updated October 27, 2026. From public map and claims data for Suffolk County; how the figures are made is on the methodology page.
What FEMA's flood zone is
FEMA's flood maps mark the land it rates at high risk of flooding. On the map those zones have names starting with A or V; V is the coastal zone where waves add to the water. FEMA calls the land in them the special flood hazard area. Everything else on the map is rated moderate or low risk, which is not the same as no risk.
The table below gives, for each area we cover in Suffolk County, how much of its built-up land is in the zone and how many of its addresses are. 27 of the 43 areas we cover have 1% or more of their built-up land in the zone.
What the zone changes for insurance
FEMA's consumer site, FloodSmart, puts it this way:
- If you own a property in a high-risk zone and have a government-backed mortgage, you must buy flood insurance.
- Most homeowners and renters insurance does not cover flood damage.
- From 2014 to 2024, almost one-third of the federal flood insurance program's claims came from outside high-risk flood areas.
Whether flood insurance makes sense for a house outside the zone, and what it would cost, is a question for an insurance agent. We do not sell insurance and have no premium figures. Source: FloodSmart, What is my flood risk?

Sorted by the share of built-up land in the zone. Addresses are the county's address points, placed against FEMA's map. Claims are every claim policyholders filed with the federal flood insurance program for the ZIP since its records begin in 1978, and the amount it paid on them. A ZIP is not an area: it can take in more than one, and its claims may come from any part of it. That is why they are not shown for an area with under 1% of its land in the zone. Sources and limits.
Your own address
An area's share says little about one house: the zone can take in one street and miss the next. The address check shows whether FEMA maps a particular address inside the zone or close to its edge, with the ground height and groundwater depth there.
